Sonia Ruiz's repeated harassment, coercion and abuse
in 2024
on social media of
a homicide victim family member, the daughter of a woman murdered by serial
killer Richard Cottingham in 1968 in Nassau County, NY. The case was
closed in 2022 after law enforcement was alerted by forensic historian Dr. Peter
Vronsky and his investigative partner Jennifer Weiss to a potential DNA link to
the serial killer Richard Cottingham, the "Torso Serial Killer" who had murdered
Ruiz's grandmother Lorraine McGraw in 1970, a case that Dr. Vronsky had led
Rockland County investigators to close in May 2022.
Ruiz after failing to
monetize exclusively for herself the story of her grandmother's murder and how
it was solved, subsequently accused Vronsky and Weiss of "manipulating" her and
"staging" Cottingham's confession to her grandmother's
murder as a "publicity stunt." Ruiz then disavowed her
grandmother's murder case closure attempting to capitalize on a new and
completely false story, that Cottingham had never confessed to the murder and
that Vronsky and Weiss "tricked" the police in Rockland County to close the
case.
Ruiz then contacted the families of nine other victims that Cottingham
confessed to murdering, attempting to cast doubt into the veracity of the cold
case closures with claims the Vronsky and Weiss had staged the confessions as a
"publicity stunt." One of the victim family members, the daughter of
a victim murdered in 1968, whose case Vronsky and Weiss assisted in closing with
DNA evidence, dared to object to and refute publicly Ruiz's false and
demented assertions about her mother's 1968 murder cold case closure, triggering from Sonia Ruiz a tirade of
multiple vicious, abusive, threatening and coercive posts
on social media directed at the victim's daughter, who now found herself
re-victimized by Ruiz.
The name of the victim is
redacted for their safety as Sonia Ruiz, has been recently subject to a court-imposed restraining order in a different case where she was
charged and arrested for felony extortion and criminal coercion. (Queens County NY District Attorney case file: #CR-001762-24QN Jan 8, 2024).
Ruiz has been a party in
five different concurrent court cases in Nassau County and Queens County, New
York, all involving her making coercive, defamatory and/or extortionist threats
and menacing victims.
Sonia Ruiz initially promoted herself on Instagram in 2022-2023 as the "granddaughter of
cold case victim - by serial killer Richard Cottingham" and made multiple
appearances on television and in press interviews about how Cottingham had
confessed to her to her grandmother's murder.

After she failed to monetize for her own exclusive profit the story of how
the murder of her
grandmother Lorraine McGraw was solved, Ruiz changed her pitch, and her
Instagram profile, now claiming, with no
evidence to show for it, that forensic historian and author Peter Vronsky
and his investigative partner Jennifer Weiss "staged" the confession in
complicity with serial killer Richard Cottingham as a "publicity stunt" and
claimed to have been "manipulated" and the "real murderer" was
still at large. (below)
